‘Simply to provoke you, Captain.’

‘What?’

The Doctor had started marching towards the elevator. Timon pulled out his blaster. ‘One step more and I shoot.’

‘Where do you think you’re going?’ demanded Blandish.

‘I’m going after Marn and Belinda,’ said the Doctor in a steely tone. ‘I don’t know what they think they’re doing, messing about with the Ghillighast. Now let me past.’

Back at the viewscreen, Daedalus was chuckling away to himself, enjoying all of this immensely.

‘You can’t fetch your TARDIS,’ said Garrett in an even tone.

‘And why not?’

‘Because it’s gone. While we were down there, in the City of Glass, it vanished.’

‘What?’

‘With your friends Compassion and Fitz inside it. I gather they got tired of waiting for you.’

The Doctor’s eyes blazed with anger and he swore profusely. ‘I’ve told them!

I’ve told them again and again!’ Then he rounded on the captain. “This is your fault! If I’ve lost my ship and my friends for ever I’ll –’

There was a sudden shrill bleeping from Garrett’s work station.

‘Ah,’ said Daedalus with a broad wink as Garrett bent to examine his monitor. ‘Here is a piece of information I think we’ve all been waiting for.’

Garrett digested the data on his screen and spoke rapidly to his commander.

‘Sir, we can afford two reasonably large discharges of sonic energy at the city.

Enough to disable it at any rate. We cannot destroy Valcea, but we might at least degrade its potential for utilising weapons of mass destruction.’

‘Ha!’ Blandish leapt out of his command chair. ‘See, Daedalus? We’ve got you beaten! We’ve got you at our mercy! I only have to give the order and –’

‘Captain,’ said the Doctor in a suddenly hushed and all too serious tone.

‘You can’t mean this. Surely you can’t –’

‘We’re going to bomb them.’

‘But Federation policy –’

‘– is quite clear on matters such as this, Doctor. We either leave in peace, having not interfered in the indigenous situation at all, or we degrade their potential for causing war. In this situation I see only that we can take the latter course. Mr Timon, would you care to prepare to act on my command?’

‘Oh, oh,’ sighed Daedalus. ‘Bliss!’

The Doctor ignored him. ‘You’re mad!’ he cried. The others on the bridge looked rather shamefaced at this. Only Garrett and Blandish seemed fully intent upon destruction. The lights switched abruptly into red-alert mode.

‘You’re insane! You don’t know for sure that Valcea has any weapons of mass destruction! You’ve no idea whether it poses a threat to the rest of Federation space!’

Blandish’s tone in response was icy. ‘It shouldn’t be here. And its supreme commander is ruthless and evil and quite antithetical to our project.’

Daedalus snorted at this. ‘Oh, how priceless.’ He came to stand beside the Doctor. ‘All I can suggest, Captain, is that you fire at will.’

The Doctor stared at him. ‘Why do you want them to attack? Why would you encourage them?’

‘What would you do now, Doctor?’ asked Daedalus gently as the bridge crew of the Nepotist scrambled into attack mode, each of them working feverishly at their stations.
